ATRIWA congratulates ECOWAS at 50, calls for transformation of colonial borders into unity bridges
The Traditional Rulers for Integration in West Africa (ATRIWA) has urged ECOWAS “to dismantle all remaining obstacles to free movement created by colonial-era borders and transform these artificial boundaries into bridges of unity.”
In a statement signed by Paramount Ruler of Togbui Deguini Adela Akpaxlin from the Clan of the Ancient Kingdom of Tado, and representative Coordinator of ATRIWA, His Eminence Dèdè (Dr.) Félix W.Y. Eke-Metoho, ATRIWA congratulated ECOWAS on its 50th-anniversary celebrations held in Accra, Ghana.
The association expressed its support for ongoing dialogue addressing the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the organization.
ATRIWA reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging intensified efforts to reintegrate these states into ECOWAS to pursue collective peace, stability, and development.
Reflecting on ECOWAS’ accomplishments since its establishment in 1975, ATRIWA highlighted the organization’s notable achievements, including the signing of the Lagos Treaty in 1975 and the significant progress made in regional integration. The free movement of people and goods across member states has contributed to improved living standards and economic growth.
ATRIWA emphasized ECOWAS’ vital role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding throughout West Africa, citing the creation of a standby force for rapid intervention in situations of armed conflict or regional security threats, as well as efforts to combat organized crime and cross-border terrorism.
Additionally, ATRIWA commended the ECOWAS Court of Justice, based in Abuja, for upholding human rights through landmark rulings that have delivered justice to victims of abuses.
The association also lauded ECOWAS’ ambition to transition from an “ECOWAS of States” to an “ECOWAS of People,” aligning with its Vision 2050 for a future of peace and prosperity.
ATRIWA called on the organization to actively consult traditional rulers and leaders, incorporating their insights to ensure grassroots mobilization and stronger community ownership of ECOWAS goals. ATRIWA further pledged to educate communities at the grassroots level, promoting positive involvement in ECOWAS’ developmental efforts across the region.
ATRIWA congratulated the “Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, and all ECOWAS institutions, as well as the citizens of the region, on this golden jubilee.”
Additionally, it applauded the ECOWAS Parliament for its efforts to enhance its powers, while advocating for progress toward transforming the body into an elected Parliament of the people, replacing the current system of appointments.
