Amupitan Promises To Audit 2023 Election Logistics Challenges
During his Senate screening on Thursday, Professor Joash Amupitan announced plans to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with a particular focus on the logistics surrounding the 2023 general elections.
The objective, he said, is to identify operational challenges within the electoral body and collaborate with key stakeholders to develop effective solutions.
Referencing a Supreme Court ruling, Amupitan clarified that INEC’s Results Viewing Portal (IREV) is not officially part of the Commission’s results collation system, a detail he noted was not adequately communicated to the public ahead of the elections.
“Many Nigerians believed IREV was integral to the collation process, but the Supreme Court has stated otherwise,” he explained.
Amupitan also emphasized the urgent need for an independent electoral offences commission, arguing that INEC currently lacks the capacity to investigate and prosecute violations.
“INEC is not equipped to handle these responsibilities, which is why a dedicated body is necessary,” he stated.
