A Beacon of Hope: The Rise of Dr Reason Ebubechukwu Onya

In the hallowed halls of I. M. Sechenov University—Russia’s oldest and most esteemed medical institution founded in 1758 — a 22-year-old Nigerian from the Ekpeye Kingdom of Rivers State lit a torch that now burns with promise for an entire generation.

Dr Reason Ebubechukwu Onya, a name that now carries gold-tipped reverence, graduated with a perfect GPA of 5.0, earning him the Gold Medal for academic excellence and the praise of his peers and professors, who simply called him “a genius.” But the day was more than just a personal triumph—it was a resounding signal of possibility for Nigerian youths and African dreamers across the globe.

Standing tall as he delivered his valedictory speech, Dr. Onya spoke not just as a scholar, but as a messenger of resilience: “Today marks the culmination of sleepless nights, hours of study and clinical rotations. It is not in vain—because the experiences that break us also build us up.”

He was quick to share his victory with others. His voice carried gratitude, tempered with humility: “No accomplishment stands alone. This achievement, I share it with all of you—my classmates, my professors, my family. You’ve seen my triumphs. You’ve seen my mistakes. And from each other, we’ve learned.”

His words stirred hearts as he turned toward fellow Nigerian youths watching from afar: “To the young boy or girl in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Egypt, wherever you may be, thinking, ‘This looks nice, but I guess it’s not for me.’ I want you to know this: Nothing is above you, and nobody is your better. You are the best.”

With emotion, he honoured the quiet strength of his parents. His father, a former Rivers State Commissioner of Urban Development and Physical Planning in Rivers State and Political Economist, presently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Rivers State University, Nkpolu, PortHarcourt exclaimed to the admiration of other parents and graduating students, “Thank you, boy! Thank you so much!” And his proud son responded: “You are truly the wind beneath my wings. Your footsteps laid the path I now walk. I am grateful to continue your legacy.”

From his mother, Dr (Mrs)  Obianma Nneka Onya, a Chief Consultant Physician of Family Medicine Department and pioneer Director of Lifestyle Clinic, University of PortHarcourt Teaching Hospital, came the gift of resilience—a lesson the young doctor channeled into his rallying call: “Never accept less. Always fight for the best. Define your present, but build for a divine future.”

His reflection on overcoming the brutal Moscow winters, emotional hurdles, and language barriers painted a portrait not of ease, but of courage earned: “We came from different corners of the world, but today we are united—with one mission: to serve and uplift communities.”

At a time when young Nigerians battle uncertainty and dream under difficult skies, Dr Onya’s story is more than a tale of scholastic greatness, it is a clarion call to believe. To persist. To excel.

“I believe in us. And I believe we are going to do great things—as long as we believe in them,” he said.
