Remi Tinubu Hits Back at Critics of Her Viral Interaction With Governor Adeleke
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has dismissed the public controversy surrounding her brief interaction with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, labeling the reaction a “needless controversy.”
In a statement posted to her Facebook page on Tuesday, Mrs. Tinubu suggested that critics often amplify minor moments to create distractions. She wrote
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinise every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy. Ọṣun lè tèǹtẹ̀ – Osun is ahead.”
Her comments refer to a viral video clip from the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, which showed the First Lady walking to the podium to whisper to Governor Adeleke after he briefly paused during his speech.
The moment sparked heated debate online, with some condemning her gesture as inappropriate and others defending it as harmless.
Senior Special Assistant to the Osun Governor on the Bureau of Social Services, Akintunde Bello, criticized the act, stating the First Lady should be cautioned. Similarly, African Democratic Congress chieftain Dele Momodu described the interaction as bullying and said Adeleke had been “openly disgraced and embarrassed before a global audience.”
Others, however, viewed the exchange differently. Dayo Fashola, an aide to former Osun Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, wrote on Facebook:
“What transpired between Oluremi Tinubu and Adeleke was light‑hearted and isn’t as serious as people are making it seem.”
Another Facebook user, Oyetunji Ayoade, defended the First Lady, commenting: “The highest respect the First Lady can give to Osun people is to stand up and inform him by herself, and she did.”
Neither Governor Adeleke nor the Presidency has issued an official statement on the matter, even as the incident continues to stir discussion on social media.
