Three Killed, Several Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday morning has left three people dead and several others with severe injuries, causing a major traffic breakdown on the critical transport route.

The accident occurred near the Secretariat axis, close to the notoriously congested Otedola Bridge, when three vehicles were involved in a violent pile-up. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and mangled wreckage as morning commuters scrambled to assist the injured.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), responded swiftly to provide medical aid. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and police cordoned off the area to manage traffic and prevent secondary accidents. Recovery teams are currently working to clear debris and restore flow to the heavily affected corridor.

This crash follows a concerning series of recent accidents on the same expressway. Just a day earlier, a collision between two trucks near Otedola Bridge hospitalized a driver and caused hours of gridlock. Days before that, two people died in a high-speed crash on the Berger axis when an unregistered vehicle struck a trailer.

Road safety advocates have pointed to reckless driving, overcrowded roads, and aging infrastructure as persistent factors behind the recurring tragedies, calling for urgent intervention from government and stakeholders.

LASTMA first reported the incident at 6:39 a.m. via its official X account and has advised motorists to use alternative routes—such as CMD-Magodo and under-bridge connectors—while exercising extreme caution in the area.

As cleanup and recovery efforts continue, attention remains on the families of the deceased, the injured fighting for recovery, and the emergency personnel working at the scene.
