William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, retired from international football on December 3, 2025, after playing 83 matches and scoring eight goals.

He participated in five major tournaments and decided to step down following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Victor Osimhen paid tribute to Troost-Ekong, calling it an honor to have shared the pitch with him. Osimhen praised Troost-Ekong’s leadership, humility, and professionalism, calling him a legend and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Alex Iwobi also expressed his sadness at the retirement, describing it as an emotional moment. He highlighted Troost-Ekong’s important role as a leader and unifying voice for the team, and extended his best wishes to him.

Tristan-Ekong’s retirement came amid criticism after Nigeria lost a World Cup qualifier penalty shootout against DR Congo, just before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In his announcement, Troost-Ekong expressed his gratitude for representing Nigeria and pledged to remain a lifelong supporter of the Super Eagles.
