Jonathan, African Leaders Trapped in Guinea-Bissau After Military Coup

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is among a delegation of African leaders and observers currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup that has thrown the nation into turmoil.

The coup unfolded on Wednesday when military officers seized control of the government, suspended the ongoing presidential electoral process, and closed the country’s borders and airports.

The power grab occurred amid a political crisis, with both the incumbent President Umaro Embaló and his main opponent, Fernando Dias, having declared themselves the winner of Sunday’s election before official results were released.

Former President Jonathan is in the country as part of a 36-member high-level joint observation mission from the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF).

In a statement, the mission expressed “deep concern” over the military intervention, noting it was “regrettable” as it came just after both leading candidates had assured the observers of their willingness to accept the official election results.

The delegation has called on the AU and ECOWAS to take urgent steps to restore constitutional order and secure the release of any detained officials.

The observers are scheduled to depart on November 29, but their exit is now contingent on the resolution of the escalating political and security crisis.
