Anglican Priest Dies in Kidnappers’ Den
The Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church in Ungwan Maijero, Kaduna, Venerable Edwin Achi, has died in the custody of his kidnappers. The clergyman was abducted alongside his wife and daughter from their home in the Nissi community on October 28, 2025.
In a statement, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, confirmed his passing “with heavy hearts and deep sorrow,” describing it as a painful loss to the entire diocese and all who knew his ministry.
The incident occurred shortly after the family had relocated to the community. Following the abduction, the kidnappers had contacted the family, demanding a N600 million ransom.
Despite the tragic death of Venerable Achi, the assailants have refused to release his wife and daughter and remain adamant in their ransom demand.
The clergyman was a native of Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State. His death underscores the severe insecurity crisis in Nigeria, which has drawn international concern, including from the United States government, which has described the ongoing violence in northern Nigeria as bearing the marks of genocide against Christians.
