Atiku Abubakar Registers as ADC Member, Shaking Up 2027 Politics

The battle for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election has taken a critical new dimension with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar officially registering as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in his home state of Adamawa.

The registration on Monday formalises Atiku’s leadership of a major opposition coalition and signals a strategic shift in the political landscape.

This move follows his public endorsement of the ADC in July as the chosen platform for a united opposition front to challenge President Bola Tinubu, a coalition that is also expected to include figures like Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal.

Videos and photos from the event showed Atiku’s convoy being met with cheers from supporters as he arrived to receive his membership card. Shortly after the registration, the former presidential candidate made the development official with a succinct post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “It’s official. -AA”

Until now, Atiku and other key opposition leaders had delayed their formal defection to the ADC.

By cementing his membership, Atiku significantly boosts the party’s national profile and moves to consolidate a fragmented opposition, setting the stage for a highly contested 2027 election.
