Dharmendra, Bollywood Megastar Dies at 89

Dharmendra Deol, the legendary Bollywood actor who embodied the Hindi film hero for over six decades, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. He was 89.

According to local media reports, the actor, beloved by millions and known simply as Dharmendra, had been unwell for the past month and died at his home.

While an official family statement was pending, the news drew an immediate outpouring of grief from the film industry. Colleagues and contemporaries, including megastar Amitabh Bachchan, gathered at a crematorium in Juhu for his funeral.

Tributes flooded in for the iconic star. Producer and director Karan Johar, who recently cast Dharmendra in his 2023 film “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” hailed him as “a massive mega star, the embodiment of a hero in mainstream cinema” in an Instagram post.

With a career spanning more than 60 years and over 300 films, Dharmendra’s versatility was unmatched. After winning a film magazine talent contest in his native Punjab, he moved to Mumbai and made his debut in 1960.

He would go on to master every genre, from art-house dramas and soft romances to gritty action blockbusters and goofy comedies, cementing his status as the top actor of his generation and an enduring icon of Indian cinema.
