Tinubu Orders Withdrawal of Police from VIP Duties
In a major policy shift to address Nigeria’s security crisis, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of all police officers assigned to Very Important Persons (VIPs).
The directive was issued during a high-level security meeting on Sunday in Abuja, attended by the heads of the Army, Air Force, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to a statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the move is designed to redeploy these officers to core police duties, thereby boosting security presence in communities, especially in remote areas that are critically under-policed.
To fill the security gap for VIPs, the President has mandated that individuals requiring personal protection must now request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
This measure is part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety, which also includes the approved recruitment of 30,000 new police officers and a federal-state collaboration to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.
