Military Probes Kebbi Governor’s Claim of Troop Withdrawal Before School Abduction

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has initiated a full-scale investigation into allegations made by Kebbi State Governor, Mohammed Nasir Idris, that troops were withdrawn prior to the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga.

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja. Titled “DHQ Reassures Nigerians Amid Rising Insecurity, Addresses Alleged Troop Withdrawal in Kebbi State,” the communique confirmed that a comprehensive review is underway to ascertain the facts concerning troop deployment and movements in the area at the time of the attack.

The investigation follows Governor Idris’s public concern that security agencies, despite receiving prior intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS) about a potential attack, had withdrawn personnel from the vicinity.

In the statement, the DHQ expressed deep concern over the abductions in both Kebbi and Niger States, condemning the acts and affirming its solidarity with the affected families.

It reassured the public that the Armed Forces are “fully engaged in ongoing operations aimed at the safe rescue of the girls.”

Addressing the governor’s claim directly, the military high command stated, “Operational decisions are made based on intelligence assessments and the wider security situation. If any gaps are identified, corrective measures will be taken.”

The statement concluded by reaffirming the military’s commitment to collaborating with state authorities and other security agencies to enhance the protection of schools and vulnerable communities, while prioritizing the rescue of the abducted students.
