Nnamdi Kanu Reportedly Moved to Sokoto Prison After Life Sentence
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been transferred from the detention facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto State, according to a disclosure by his former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.
Ejimakor raised the alarm over the move in a tweet on Friday, questioning the wisdom of relocating Kanu to a facility in the far northwest, which places him at a significant distance from his legal team, family, and support base in the southeast.
He drew a historical parallel, stating, “When Awolowo was convicted in 1963, he was sent to the East, a neutral zone in his feud with the North.”
This development, which has not been independently confirmed by official sources, follows Thursday’s landmark verdict by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on five counts of terrorism, with additional 20-year and 5-year sentences on two other counts, all to run concurrently.
The judge had indicated that placing Kanu in a standard facility like the Kuje Correctional Centre might be inappropriate due to security risks, suggesting a need for a more secure location.
The sentencing was praised by the lead prosecutor, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who described it as a strong message that no one is above the law. The transfer to Sokoto appears to be the first step in implementing the court’s sentence.
