Troops Ambushed, Scores Wounded During Rescue Mission for Abducted Kebbi Schoolgirls
In a severe setback to the operation to rescue the abducted students of Government Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, scores of Nigerian troops were wounded after being ambushed by terrorists.
The attack occurred just one day after the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, gave a direct order for troops of Operation Fasan Yamma to go “all out” against the bandits. Emphasizing the mission’s urgency, General Shaibu had commanded, “You must continue day and night fighting. We must find these children.”
He further instructed commanders to leverage intelligence for precision, stating, “Once you receive information on something like this, act professionally and decisively. This is not just about our image; it is about doing our job properly.”
Following these orders, troops were deployed on a 24-hour operation to secure the students’ safe return. However, during the mission, the soldiers were lured into a deadly ambush by the terrorists, resulting in numerous casualties.
Video footage from the scene depicted the grim aftermath, with several wounded soldiers lying on the ground awaiting medical evacuation. The severity of the injuries was underscored by one soldier who, in Hausa, highlighted the critical condition of a comrade: “Musa has a bullet lodged in his leg. His condition is very bad.”
Visual evidence also showed the troops’ operational vehicle riddled with bullet holes, testament to the ferocity of the assault. Despite the ambush, security forces are continuing their efforts to rescue the schoolgirls while simultaneously providing aid to the injured soldiers.
