Eric Chelle “Voodoo” Excuse for Super Eagles’ Defeat Sparks Mockery Online
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has attributed Nigeria’s heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo to alleged supernatural interference, claiming the opposition used “voodoo” during the decisive moments of the match.
The encounter, which ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, saw DR Congo clinch the final African spot for the intercontinental playoffs, shattering Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Chelle pointed to activities on the Congolese bench as the source of his anxiety during the penalty shootout.
“During the penalty session, the DR Congo did some voodoo every time, so this is why I was a little nervous,” Chelle stated.
“The Congolese bench was sprinkling something that is like water.”
The coach’s unusual explanation was met with swift mockery and criticism on social media. Many users dismissed the claim as a poor excuse for a tactical failure, while others jested that Nigeria had simply been outdone in an area where it is also stereotypically known for occult practices in football.
One X user, Maazi Chinualumogu, lambasted the coach, writing, “Eric Chelle blaming ‘voodoo’… instead of owning his tactics? Weak… Shame on this coach for this clownery! Time to sack the excuses.”
The controversy has overshadowed the post-match analysis, shifting focus from Nigeria’s on-field performance to the coach’s remarkable allegations following one of the most significant losses of his tenure.
