The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed its judgment in a case filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, aimed at halting the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2025 national convention.
Justice Peter Lifu, who had previously set Thursday for the ruling after hearing arguments from all parties, did not deliver the judgment as scheduled.
The court registrar announced that the decision was not yet ready and that the parties would be informed of a new date.
The suit, which has the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants, centers on Lamido’s claim that he was unjustly denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form for the party’s national chairmanship position.
The court has also joined three other PDP chieftains as interested parties in the matter.
This delay adds another layer of uncertainty to the PDP’s plans, which are already under significant legal pressure. Just this Tuesday, Justice Lifu issued an interim order restraining the PDP from proceeding with its convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
The judge also barred INEC from supervising or recognizing the outcomes of the event, citing the party’s failure to comply with legal requirements for publishing its convention timetable.
Justice Lifu’s order is the second such injunction from the Federal High Court. On October 31, Justice James Omotosho issued a similar ruling, stopping INEC from recognizing the convention’s results on the grounds that the PDP failed to provide the mandatory 21-day notice for its meetings and congresses.
With the judgment now deferred, the fate of the PDP’s crucial national convention remains in legal limbo, casting a shadow over the party’s efforts to elect new national officers and resolve its internal conflicts.
