APC Hits 76 Senators as Jarigbe’s Defection Completes Cross River Sweep

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further solidified its majority in the Senate with the defection of Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North.

The lawmaker formally crossed from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Senator Jarigbe’s defection letter, read on the floor by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, attributed his move to deep-rooted internal crises within the PDP.

The defection brings the APC’s tally in the Senate to 76 members, significantly boosting its legislative dominance.

In his letter, Jarigbe elaborated on his reasons for leaving, stating, “This decision was taken after deep and thoughtful reflection on the current state of my former party.

“It is with profound regret that I cite the prevailing deep-seated and irreconcilable differences, as well as the persistent and deliberate factions within the party at both the national and state levels, as the primary reason for my departure.”

He further justified his move by expressing confidence in the ruling party, adding, “I believe that the APC, under the leadership of our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and your own steady leadership of the National Assembly, provides the stable and progressive platform necessary to deliver on the mandate and democratic dividends expected by the people of Cross River North.”

This political shift has notable consequences. The PDP’s representation in the Senate is now reduced to 25 seats. Furthermore, the defection means that all three senatorial seats from Cross River State are now held by the APC, completing the party’s control over the state’s representation in the upper legislative chamber.

The move occurs against a backdrop of renewed turmoil within the PDP, which remains embroiled in a protracted leadership tussle within its National Working Committee (NWC), leading to a series of suspensions and escalating internal divisions.
