Eighteen people have been detained in Turkey as part of a large-scale investigation into a football betting scandal involving referees.

The arrests include 17 referees and one club president from the Turkish Super Lig.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had earlier suspended 149 referees and assistant referees following an internal audit that uncovered evidence of widespread betting activity by licensed referees, with 152 out of 571 referees found to have placed bets.

Although none have been proven to have bet on matches they officiated, prosecutors suspect some shared confidential information with illegal bookmakers. The detained individuals face charges of abuse of duty and match manipulation.

This scandal has been described as a “moral crisis” in Turkish football, prompting disciplinary actions and criminal investigations across 12 cities in Turkey.
