Breaking: Madagascar’s Army Seizes Power After Youth-Driven Protests Oust President

The military in Madagascar has taken control of the government following a parliamentary vote that ousted President Andry Rajoelina, who has since fled the country.

According to Al Jazeera, Colonel Michael Randrianirina announced the takeover on Tuesday while standing before the ceremonial presidential palace in Antananarivo, the nation’s capital. “We have taken the power,” he declared.

Randrianirina revealed that the military would dissolve all state institutions except the lower house of parliament and establish a governing council made up of army and gendarmerie officers. He also confirmed the suspension of the constitution and the authority of the High Constitutional Court.

A referendum is planned for two years from now, though specific details remain unclear. In the interim, a prime minister will be appointed to oversee the transition to civilian rule.

President Rajoelina reportedly fled Madagascar on Sunday after segments of the military defected to support Gen Z-led protests demanding his resignation. The demonstrations, which began on September 25 over water and electricity shortages, quickly expanded to include broader concerns such as corruption, poor governance, and inadequate public services.

On Monday, thousands of demonstrators gathered in the capital, chanting calls for the president to step down. The unrest mirrors similar movements in other countries, including Nepal, where the prime minister resigned last month under public pressure.

Rajoelina is said to have departed aboard a French military aircraft and reached an agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron.
