Trump Escalates Trade War with 100% Tariffs on Chinese Goods
U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified trade tensions with China by announcing a new round of 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports, signaling a renewed escalation in the ongoing U.S.-China trade war.
The announcement, made Friday, adds to the existing 30 percent tariffs and is set to take effect on or before November 1. The move comes in response to China’s recent decision to impose export controls on its rare earth elements—materials vital to electronics, clean energy, and defense manufacturing.
China, which holds the world’s largest reserves of rare earths, said the restrictions are intended to protect national security and strategic interests. In reaction, Trump condemned the measure as “extraordinarily aggressive” and “extremely hostile,” calling it “a moral disgrace in international trade.”
He stated: “Based on the fact that China has taken this unprecedented position, and speaking only for the U.S.A., and not other nations who were similarly threatened, starting November 1st, 2025 (or sooner, depending on any further actions or changes taken by China), the United States of America will impose a tariff of 100% on China, over and above any tariff that they are currently paying.”*
In addition to the tariffs, Trump announced that the U.S. will implement export controls on all critical software.
Electronics—one of China’s top exports to the U.S.—had previously been granted a tariff exemption, making them subject to a reduced rate of 20 percent instead of the broader 145 percent tariff. In response, China had lowered its own tariffs on American goods from 125 percent to 10 percent, while the U.S. adjusted its rates to 30 percent.
A planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea later this month has now been called off. In a post on Truth Social following the tariff announcement, Trump stated he no longer saw any reason to proceed with the meeting.
