Grief in Kogi as Bus Crash Claims Ten Lives, Injures Eleven
Ten passengers have been confirmed dead following a tragic accident at Apamaru, along the Lokoja-Obajana highway in Kogi State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that 11 other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash, which involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, carrying 21 male occupants.
FRSC spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, confirmed the incident occurred on the night of Friday, October 10.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC crash team revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking, which led the driver to lose control during the night journey.
“Out of the 21 persons involved, ten were killed on the spot, while eleven sustained varying degrees of injuries, including deep cuts, fractures, and bruises,” Ogungbemide stated.
The injured were taken to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment, while the deceased were handed over to their families and laid to rest at Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana, in accordance with Islamic rites.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reiterated that night travel, speeding, and reckless overtaking remain leading causes of fatal road crashes in Nigeria.
He urged commercial drivers to strictly follow road safety regulations and announced that the Corps would intensify enforcement against overloading and continue advocacy to discourage night travel along high-risk routes.
Mohammed also called on passengers to stay alert and actively caution or report drivers who engage in dangerous driving behavior.
