Lagos Govt Relocates Ikeja Computer Village To Katangowa Market
The Lagos State Government has disclosed its readiness to relocate the Ikeja Computer Village market to the newly established Katangowa Market, part of an effort to address longstanding urban challenges in the area.
On Monday, government officials held a stakeholder meeting with traders at Computer Village, Ikeja, to discuss the proposed move to the Katangowa Market, located in the Agbado-Oke Odo area.
The meeting, convened under the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aimed to ensure transparency and involve all stakeholders in the relocation process.
This relocation forms a key part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader strategy for urban renewal and decentralization, designed to reduce congestion in major commercial hubs, improve living conditions, and promote sustainable development across the city.
“For the first time in 15 years, the government is engaging directly with you at your market on this issue, reflecting the governor’s commitment to openness and collaboration,” said Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development.
The Katangowa Market is set to feature modern amenities such as hotels, banking halls, recreational centers, parking facilities, a fire station, a police post, and well-constructed access roads.
Officials explained that relocating Ikeja’s Computer Village to Katangowa would enhance business efficiency while restoring order to Ikeja, initially designed as a residential district.
Traders were encouraged to support the move by avoiding unauthorized trading on roads and drainage channels.
Urban Development Department representatives outlined the advantages of the new market site, highlighting its potential to expand trading opportunities and create a more conducive environment for both traders and customers.
Chief (Mrs.) Abisola Azeez, Iyaloja of Computer Village, expressed support for the relocation, noting that the new site would broaden the market’s capacity and provide better facilities.
Other attendees at the meeting included Oladimeji Animashaun, General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency; Florence Gbaye, Coordinating Director of Lagos State Building Control Agency; Segun Williams, Senior Special Assistant on Urban Development, and executive members of the market association.
Computer Village has witnessed rapid growth, attracting traders, technicians, and customers from across Nigeria and West Africa. However, this expansion has contributed to urban problems such as traffic congestion, overcrowding, illegal street trading, poor sanitation, and pressure on infrastructure in Ikeja.
These persistent challenges have prompted urban planners and state authorities to call for the market’s relocation to the Katangowa Market as part of Lagos State’s comprehensive urban transformation efforts.
