Nigerian Arrested For Duping US Varsity $235,000
Farouk Adekunle Adepoju, a Nigerian resident in the United Kingdom, has been arrested for an alleged wire fraud scheme involving $235,000 and Western Pennsylvania University in the United States.
Adepoju was taken into custody by UK authorities on September 15, 2025, and is currently awaiting extradition to the US to face seven charges.
According to a statement on the US Department of Justice website, Adepoju’s indictment was unsealed on Thursday.
The allegations state that between March and April 2023, Adepoju remotely accessed a protected computer belonging to a Western Pennsylvania construction company working for a university in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
After gaining access, he reportedly altered email rules for an employee’s account at the construction company, registered a spoofed domain and email account impersonating another company employee.
Using the spoofed email, Adepoju sent fraudulent requests to the university’s staff, instructing them to update payment details for the construction company to a fraudulent bank account.
Following these emails, the university changed the payment information and transferred approximately $235,266.80 to the fraudulent account, funds which have not been recovered.
If convicted, Adepoju faces up to 20 years in prison.
