One Dead, Nine Injured In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident

A fatal road accident occurred at New Garage, heading toward the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to nine others.

The incident was confirmed in a statement released on Saturday by Route Commander Oluwadamilola Jayeola, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command.

According to Jayeola, the crash happened around 6:55 a.m. and involved a white Iveco truck (registration number MEK 34 XC) and a white Toyota commercial bus (ENU 814 XJ).

“One male passenger sadly lost his life, while nine others—eight men and one woman—suffered varying degrees of injuries. No one escaped unscathed,” she said.

FRSC personnel responded promptly, transporting the injured to the Emergency Centre in Ojota and Gbagada General Hospital. The deceased was taken to Real Divine Hospital Mortuary in Ibafo.

The wreckage was swiftly cleared, allowing traffic to resume normal flow.

Jayeola added that officers from the Motor Traffic Division of the Ojodu Abiodun Police Station have taken custody of the vehicles involved, as investigations continue. Preliminary findings suggest that speeding and road obstruction were contributing factors.

Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, Lagos Sector Commander, extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He reiterated that speeding remains a leading cause of avoidable crashes, particularly during the ember months, and urged motorists to drive with caution and focus.

Hamzat reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safer roads and protecting lives and property nationwide.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, spanning approximately 127.6 kilometers, is one of Nigeria’s busiest and most hazardous highways, linking Lagos to Ibadan and accommodating heavy inter-state traffic.

This latest tragedy adds to a growing list of accidents along the corridor, including a recent crash that left six dead and another where 19 passengers narrowly escaped death. Speeding, poor road conditions, and reckless driving continue to plague the expressway, despite repeated safety warnings from authorities.
