Police Foil Coronation of unauthorised ‘Obi of Lagos’, Detain Suspect
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man claiming to be the “Obi of Lagos” and three accomplices as they attempted to hold an unauthorized installation ceremony.
The principal suspect, Chubuike Azubike a 65-year-old indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Imo State, was taken into custody alongside co-conspirators aged 41, 51, and 65.
Intelligence revealed the group planned to unveil a prototype of a supposed ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on September 13 at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.
Upon learning of the plan, the police swiftly sealed off the venue to prevent any public disruption and protect residents from being misled.
The operation involved deploying conventional police officers, Eko Strike Force teams, and tactical units to ensure the event did not proceed as scheduled and maintain peace in the area.
The suspects remain detained as investigations into their activities continue. The Lagos Police Commissioner, Olohundare Jimoh, cautioned the public to be wary of impostors exploiting traditional institutions for personal gain, emphasizing that such actions are illegal under Lagos State law and pose a threat to societal peace.
The police assured decisive actions would be taken against anyone undermining legality, public order, and state integrity.
