El-Rufai backs Peter Obi for president, says ‘my views on him have changed’
Bashir El-Rufai, a prominent critic of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has recently expressed a significant shift in his perception of Obi. The son of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Bashir was known for his vocal opposition to Obi’s presidential ambitions during the 2023 election cycle. However, in a surprising turn of events, he took to his official X account to share that his views have evolved.
In his post, Bashir stated, “Peter Obi is surprisingly not a bad person after all. My views on him have changed recently. My mind was poisoned by my former party members. Sai Obi!” This candid admission highlights a newfound appreciation for Obi, suggesting that his previous negative opinions were heavily influenced by his association with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party he supported during the last election.
This change in sentiment comes amidst speculation regarding potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election. There are growing rumors that both Bashir’s father and Peter Obi may join forces under the banner of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). On Monday, Bashir’s father officially announced his departure from the ruling APC to align with the SDP, further fueling discussions about possible collaborations in the upcoming elections.
Bashir’s recent tweets have not only praised Obi but also encouraged young Nigerians to consider joining the SDP, indicating an active role in shaping the party’s future. He mentioned that there would soon be an online platform for prospective members to register and join.
In response to Bashir’s remarks, Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, criticized El-Rufai’s defection, labeling it as an “inordinate ambition destined to fail.” Bwala emphasized that associating with “sore losers” to unseat the incumbent is not a viable political strategy.
The political landscape in Nigeria is witnessing notable shifts as figures like Bashir El-Rufai reconsider their alliances and public stances. With his father’s recent exit from the APC and Bashir’s evolving views on Peter Obi, many are left wondering how these developments will influence the dynamics of the 2027 elections. As speculation mounts regarding potential collaborations and new political strategies, both Bashir and Obi may play pivotal roles in shaping Nigeria’s future political landscape.
