A petroleum tanker carrying approximately 45,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, caught fire in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday at Onipe Village, near Idi Ayunre, along the Ijebu Ode–Ibadan Road, contrary to earlier reports suggesting it occurred on the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road.

According to eyewitness accounts, the tanker lost control and veered off the road into a nearby bush before bursting into flames. The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from this unfortunate event.

“The fire was reported at exactly 08:05 AM on Sunday, March 9, 2025,” Akinyinka stated. “Upon receiving the alert, fire personnel, led by Assistant Chief Fire Service (ACFS) Olubunmi, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, we found that a petrol tanker loaded with 45,000 liters of fuel had lost control while in motion and subsequently caught fire after swerving off the road into a forested area.”

He further explained that the fire brigade acted swiftly to contain the blaze using a foam chemical compound. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded; however, the tanker itself suffered extensive damage due to the fire.

The presence of officers from the Nigerian Police Force’s Idi Ayunre Division and members of the Agbekoya group played a crucial role in maintaining security at the scene during and after the incident.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this accident while ensuring that safety measures are upheld in the area to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, there is a heightened focus on addressing safety protocols surrounding the transportation of hazardous materials like petrol in order to mitigate risks associated with such incidents.
