No More Auto-Renewals As Students Must Reapply For NELFUND Loans Annually
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a revised directive mandating that students in tertiary institutions must reapply for upkeep loans at the start of each academic session.
Under the new guidelines, loan disbursements will no longer carry over automatically into subsequent academic years. Students progressing to a new session will be required to submit fresh applications to continue receiving financial support for upkeep.
“Upkeep payments will automatically end once an institution’s academic year concludes,” NELFUND clarified.
“Students entering a new academic year will not receive disbursements for the previous session.”
To support this transition, NELFUND is upgrading its loan portal to reflect the changes. The enhanced system will now display only the upkeep loans received by each student per session, a move aimed at promoting transparency and accountability.
Institutions have also been urged to promptly upload their academic calendars and sessional details to facilitate timely access to student benefits.
“Applicants must apply at the beginning of each academic session to qualify for both institutional charges and upkeep support,” the Fund emphasized.
“The portal is being automated to ensure accuracy and will now show only the upkeep loans collected within the relevant session.”
Reaffirming its dedication to student welfare, NELFUND stated.
“We remain committed to delivering accessible, transparent, and efficient loan services to Nigerian students, and we rely on the cooperation of all stakeholders to make this possible.”
