Nigeria Shuts Down  13 Million Social Media Accounts for Offensive Content Violations

The federal government has deactivated over 13 million social media accounts for breaching the Code of Practice on offensive content.

These accounts were removed from platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

This action was detailed in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, submitted by major interactive computer service providers such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The Code of Practice was jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

According to Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, a total of 58,909,112 pieces of offensive content were taken down across various platforms.

She praised Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their adherence to the code.

Umar revealed that 754,629 complaints were filed by users, resulting in 420,439 pieces of content being removed and subsequently re-uploaded after appeals.

“These compliance reports offer valuable insight into how platforms are addressing user safety in accordance with the code and their own community standards,” she stated.

She added that the submission of these reports represents a major stride toward creating a safer and more responsible digital space for Nigerians. It also highlights the platforms’ dedication to maintaining a secure and trustworthy online environment.

The Code of Practice requires large service platforms to be registered in Nigeria, comply with local laws, fulfill tax obligations, and uphold online safety standards.

While acknowledging the progress made, Umar emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration among stakeholders to build a safer digital ecosystem.

“NITDA remains committed to partnering with industry leaders, civil society, and regulators to enhance user safety, boost digital literacy, and foster transparency and trust in Nigeria’s digital landscape,” she concluded.
