US Revokes 6,000 Student Visas Under Foreign Policy Law

Since Secretary of State Marco Rubio assumed office seven months ago, the U.S. State Department has revoked approximately 6,000 student visas, according to a statement released Monday.

Rubio has invoked a little-known legal provision that permits the rescission of visas for individuals considered to be acting against U.S. foreign policy interests, a move that has been welcomed by President Donald Trump’s conservative supporters.

This action aligns with the broader efforts of the Trump administration to pursue mass deportations of individuals residing in the country unlawfully.

A State Department official noted that the majority of the revoked visas were linked to violations such as assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and alleged support for terrorism.

Of the total, around 4,000 were specifically tied to legal infractions.

The department did not disclose the nationalities of those affected, although Rubio has publicly committed to taking a tougher stance on students from China.

In March, Rubio stated that visa revocations were occurring daily, referring to activist students in stark terms.

He has particularly criticized those who have demonstrated against Israel, accusing some of anti-Semitism, allegations that the activists have denied.

The administration has encountered legal challenges in two prominent cases. Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident who organized pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, was released by a judge in June. Khalil, whose child was born during his detention, has since filed a lawsuit against the administration, alleging intimidation.

Similarly, Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish graduate student at Tufts University who authored a critical article about Israel in a campus publication, was released by a judge in May pending further legal proceedings. She had reportedly been detained by masked plainclothes agents on a Massachusetts street.

Rubio has defended the administration’s authority to issue and revoke visas without judicial oversight, asserting that non-citizens are not entitled to constitutional protections such as free speech.
