Hisbah Arrests 62 in Kano Over Alleged Immoral Conduct During Rainstorm
In the quiet town of Dawakin Kudu, the rhythmic sound of rain on rooftops gave way to sirens and shouts as 62 individuals, 27 men and 35 women, were apprehended in a dramatic raid at the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) annex.
The operation, led by the Kano State Hisbah Board in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), followed a tip-off from concerned residents.
According to Deputy Commandant Mujahid Aminudeen, the group had gathered under the cover of persistent rainfall, allegedly engaging in activities deemed contrary to the moral codes upheld by the state’s Shari’a law.
The raid wasn’t an isolated event. Just weeks earlier, 26 women were arrested at a hotel in Kano metropolis, following public complaints about suspected immoral behavior. In both cases, authorities recovered alcoholic beverages and reported signs of intoxication among the suspects.
The Hisbah Board, known for its role in enforcing Islamic moral standards, has vowed to sustain these operations. Aminudeen emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to report any suspicious gatherings or behaviors.
For many in Kano, these events reflect a broader tension between tradition and modernity, between youthful exuberance and communal expectations. As the suspects await court proceedings, the community continues to grapple with questions of morality, freedom, and the role of religious enforcement in everyday life.
