Tinubu’s $100,000 Pledge To Super Falcons Still Unfulfilled – Ajibade
Amid growing concerns over a long-standing pattern of unkept promises to Nigerian athletes, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has voiced her disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to deliver the $100,000 reward and other commitments made following the team’s triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
In a candid conversation with Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade was asked directly, “Have they delivered the $100,000?”
Her response was sobering: “We have not received our money, but hopefully, it would be paid. They have not paid, none of the promises have been fulfilled.”
Ajibade, who led the Falcons to yet another record-breaking WAFCON title, echoed a sentiment familiar to many Nigerian athletes, skepticism born from years of governmental pledges that never materialised. Despite the celebratory fanfare that followed their victory, including a reception at the Presidential Villa, the promised rewards remain elusive.
President Bola Tinubu had announced a generous package for the team: each player and technical staff member was to receive $100,000 and a three-bedroom apartment, alongside the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON).
He praised their “indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage,” calling their win a historic moment for Nigeria.
Yet, for the players, the celebration feels incomplete.
The echoes of past disappointments loom large, and until the promises are fulfilled, the victory remains shadowed by doubt.
