Students at Lagos State University (LASU) are relieved as the workers’ strike has been suspended after about two weeks of halted academic activities. The strike, which began on July 31, 2025, involved several staff unions including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), organized under the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

The suspension decision was reached on Monday, August 11, 2025, following weeks of negotiations with the Lagos State Government.

A significant breakthrough occurred after a meeting with the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, where an agreement was made for the government to pay 12 months of the 23-month salary arrears owed to staff related to salary increments.

The state will cover nine months’ payment, and the university will pay the remaining three months in installments from August to December 2025.

Despite some initial rejection by workers who demanded full payment upfront, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, urged acceptance of the compromise to avoid prolonged harm to students and the university’s reputation.

Following this resolution, LASU’s Senate approved the resumption of all academic and social activities starting Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

Students are to return to the hostels at Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses in preparation for the second-semester examinations now scheduled to commence on Monday, August 18, 2025.
