From Lekki’s Boreholes Comes ‘Shit Water,’ Lagos Govt Warns

The Lagos State Government has expressed concern over the quality of water consumed by residents in the Lekki area, cautioning that individuals who rely on boreholes may be ingesting contaminated water.

During a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, issued the warning, noting that untreated wastewater in the region could be infiltrating underground water sources, thereby posing serious health risks.

“On wastewater treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,’” he said.

He further revealed that the government has initiated plans to treat all wastewater in the area to eliminate potential health hazards. “Once we’re able to treat all wastewater in this axis, we should be able to eradicate diseases linked to untreated water,” he added.

Addressing the issue of flooding, Adegbite acknowledged that despite significant investments in drainage infrastructure, more work remains. He attributed the unusually heavy rainfall during the typical August break to complex environmental factors.

“Yesterday’s heavy rainfall was unexpected, especially during the August break. However, it’s a result of various complex challenges. Even with the substantial resources we’ve committed, there’s still much to be done,” he said.

Lekki has witnessed explosive growth in residential and commercial development, but water infrastructure has not kept pace.

Many areas lack access to public water pipelines, forcing residents to depend on boreholes and sachet water, which are sold double the price of what obtained on Lagos Mainland.

Due to the unreliable public system, most residents depend on privately drilled boreholes, which are now being flagged by the government as potentially contaminated.
