Buhari’s Journey Ends in Daura as Nation Bids Farewell

The sun has set on one of Nigeria’s most enduring figures. At exactly 5. 52 p.m. the remains of the former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest in the quiet embrace of his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, inside the very compound where he spent his final years.

The grave, dug in Islamic way was without ceramic to allow for dust to dust, serving as the final abode of the 82 year old leader who spent 10 years as Military Head of State and President of Nigeria.

The Generals in the Nigerian Army served as the pall bearers to their former Commander and Chief of Arm Forces.

SentinelNewsNg.com reports that His son Yusuff performed the dust to dust rites while none of his female children and wife not present at the graveyard according to Islamic tenet.

Among the pall bearers, are the Guards Brigade Commander under President Buhari, Major Gen. M.T. Usman; Major Gen S. Nuhu; a former spokesman for the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun; Rear Admiral SI Ngatuwa; Rear Admiral JO Ajodo; a former Commandant NAFRC, AVM A Amesinlola; AVM I Sani and AVM OC Obiabaka.

His passing at 82, after a prolonged illness in a London clinic, marks the end of a chapter that shaped the nation’s history.

As his flag-draped coffin arrived in Daura around 4 p.m. in a solemn convoy from Katsina, thousands lined the roads, heads bowed, hearts heavy.

The air was thick with reverence and sorrow. For many, it wasn’t just the burial of a leader, it was the farewell to an era.

President Bola Tinubu led a host of dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, paying tribute to a man who journeyed from military ruler to democratically elected president. His wife, Oluremi Tinubu, stood beside Mrs. Aisha Buhari and the grieving children, offering quiet strength in a moment of profound loss.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, read the citation of the President at the grave yard after the traditional 21 gun salute.

The Federal Government declared Tuesday a public holiday, allowing the nation to pause and reflect. At the helipad near his residence, the Chief Imam of Daura led the funeral prayer, as the crowd whispered prayers and memories.

The ceremony drew an extraordinary gathering of Nigeria’s political elite and traditional rulers—former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, and governors past and present. The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar, and the Emir of Kazaure, Ahmad Dangiwa, stood among them, symbols of tradition honoring a man who bridged generations.

From the Umaru Musa Yaradua International Airport, the arrival of Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Zeine underscored Buhari’s regional legacy.
