Lamine Yamal’s Mafia-Themed Birthday Triggers Backlash, Faces Probe
The Spanish government has called for an official investigation into Barcelona football star Lamine Yamal’s 18th birthday party following allegations of discriminatory entertainment and inappropriate hiring practices.
Yamal, who turned 18 on July 13, hosted a lavish mafia-themed celebration attended by around 200 guests, including teammates, family, and celebrities. However, the event has drawn sharp criticism after reports surfaced that individuals with dwarfism were hired as entertainers and that women were allegedly selected based on specific physical attributes.
Claudio Calvo, a social media model, claimed she was approached to recruit 12 women with a particular breast size to attend the party.
The Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE) condemned the use of people with dwarfism as entertainment, calling it degrading and discriminatory. The group has filed a formal complaint and announced legal action.
Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has requested the public prosecutor’s office to investigate whether the party violated disability rights laws. Jesús Martín, the General Director for Disability, expressed concern over the influence of wealthy public figures and emphasized that “the law is for everyone, for the humble and for the powerful.”
Yamal, who is considered one of Spain’s brightest football talents, has not publicly responded to the allegations. If found guilty of violating Spain’s disability rights legislation, he could face fines of up to €1 million.
The controversy has sparked a national debate over ethical boundaries in celebrity culture and the treatment of people with disabilities in entertainment.
Earlier, the Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE) threatened to take legal action, and the Spanish government joined those condemning Yamal and demanded a probe into the party.
According to Marca, Yamal could be hit with a fine of up to £867,000, and the General Director of Disability in the government, Jesús Martín, wants ministers to approve an investigation.
He said, “We are concerned that people with money, people with power, believe themselves to be unpunished. The law is for everyone, for the humble and for the powerful.’ Martin also expressed his fear that this kind of party could impact impressionable young fans who look up to Yamal and copy his behaviour.
“The ADEE, a member organisation of the Spanish Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities, condemns and publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment at the recent 18th birthday party of soccer player Lamine Yamal,’ their statement read.
“The Association announces that it will take legal and social action to safeguard the dignity of people with disabilities, considering that these actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful.”
