Lagos to enforce ban on single-user plastics July 1

Lagos State Government will begin enforcement of ban on single-use plastics from July 1, 2025.

This was disclosed in a terse post issued on X by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday.

Back in February, Wahab hosted members of the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBRA) to a discussion on modalities for the commencement of the enforcement.

“We all understand that there is no way we are going to enforce that ban that it won’t affect the FBRA members one way or the other as business owners, as manufacturers and suppliers. So part of this our gathering was about the enforcement and I believe before the end of this month, there will be another engagement in order to work on the modalities that will lead us into full enforcement,” the commissioner said at the meeting.

He said unlike styrofoam, single-use plastic is more complicated and the government is trying to do what is right for a sustainable environment.

He said FBRA members agreed with the government, speaking with one voice that they need the ban even more than the government.
