Former Commissioner for Rural and Community Development in Kano State, Abbas Sani Abbas, who was sacked by Governor Abba Yusuf, has defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) to increase the list of politicians leaving the NNPP.
He made the announcement during a visit to the Kano residence of Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, on Friday night.
This defection is part of a larger trend, with hundreds of NNPP leaders from across Kano State’s 44 local government areas leaving the party, along with thousands of their supporters. The mass movement, referred to as the ‘Barau Tsunami,’ saw many former NNPP members discard the red caps, a symbol of the Kwankwsiyya movement, in favor of the APC.
The wave of defections follows calls from certain NNPP leaders for Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to take a firmer stance on governance. Last month, this led to the dismissal of Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, and five commissioners, including Abbas.
During his visit to Senator Barau’s home, Abbas expressed his commitment to APC and promised to work toward the party’s success not only in Kano but also across the country. He was warmly received by Senator Barau, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, the APC Chairman in Kano State, and other key party figures.
