55,000 Security Personnel Deployed as INEC Moves Materials for Anambra Governorship Race
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials ahead of the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election, with a massive deployment of 55,000 security personnel to ensure safety and transparency.
Materials arrived at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch in Awka on Wednesday and were dispatched on Thursday under the supervision of the Anambra Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Elizabeth Agwu. The process was closely monitored by party agents and conducted under tight security.
Dr. Agwu emphasized that early distribution was essential to guarantee timely delivery to all polling units. “INEC is fully prepared to deliver a credible and peaceful election,” she said, urging voters to participate actively and not assume their votes won’t count.
Sensitive materials, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electoral forms, were sorted and distributed in the presence of security operatives and party representatives. Movement to Registration Area Centres (RACs) has already commenced as part of final-stage logistics.
Commissioner of Police CP Abayomi Shogunle announced the increase in security deployment from 45,000 to 55,000 personnel, stating that the reinforcement is aimed at protecting voters and electoral officials—not intimidating them. “At least three officers will be stationed at every polling unit,” he assured.
The security team includes personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Immigration Service, NDLEA, DSS, and other agencies. CP Shogunle reiterated that the election would be conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful atmosphere.
INEC confirmed that 16 candidates from 16 political parties will contest the governorship seat, with incumbent Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) seeking re-election.
