16 Injured In Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Crash
Sixteen commuters were lucky to survive a late-night crash on Monday involving a Toyota Camry, a Suzuki bus, and a tricycle near Iron Market along the notoriously hazardous Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to the Ota Divisional Commander of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Salau Hammed, the accident, which occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m., was triggered when the Camry, reportedly speeding, lost control and ploughed into the tricycle and bus.
Both the car and tricycle had no registration numbers, while the bus bore plate number KRD 246 YK.
Three passengers, a woman and two men, sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to Adetutu Hospital in the Ilepa area for treatment.
Drivers and passengers navigating the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway have long lamented the deteriorating condition of the road, marked by potholes, poor signage, and inadequate lighting.
Such conditions make maneuvering treacherous, especially after dark, heightening the risk of sudden accidents like Monday’s crash.
“This tragic incident underscores how unforgiving these roads can be when speed and bad infrastructure collide,” a survivor said.
Hammad warned motorists to curb their speed, citing how recklessness and unsafe road conditions compound the danger.
The damaged vehicles were promptly cleared to prevent further gridlock on the heavily used route—a lifeline for daily commuters already burdened by traffic snarls and transport disruptions.
